There is a difference between believing in Jesus and just saying that you believe. The efforts of those people who try to prove their faith through their good deeds alone are a long way from the faith of which the Bible speaks.
So let's take a look at our own faith and the intrinsic nature of the faith that the Bible teaches. I would like to ask the many people who say they believe in God whether they actually believe or are making an effort to believe. Many people think that it is difficult to believe because they associate struggling and making a great effort with the meaning of the term "believe." They think that believing means being restricted and carrying a heavy burden.
"Believing" is a matter of completely entrusting yourself to something. This is the attitude that arises in a person when he reaches a state in which he realizes that his actions and efforts are to no avail.
When you are being driven in a car, provided the vehicle is in good working order and the driver is not drunk, you can ride along without any fears. You never know when or where an accident might occur, but you entrust yourself to the car.
When I travel by plane, the thought sometimes crosses my mind that I am completely in the hands of the plane and its pilot. This kind of faith is a matter of trusting implicitly. There is nothing you yourself can do inside the plane to make it fly any more smoothly or safely. No efforts on your part can make any difference. If you just sit quietly and entrust yourself entirely, you will automatically get to your destination.
This is also the case when it comes to our faith in God. Are you uneasy and anxious? Or do you live your life having entrusted everything to God? The Bible does not ask us to try hard or make a great effort. Believing always has meant, and always will mean, trusting without any doubts. The term "believing" has the same meaning whether it is used by someone who believes in Jesus or by someone who does not.
As a baby grows, his mother feeds and clothes him. And he entrusts himself to her without any worries at all. He is not capable of doing anything for himself, but his parents are capable of doing everything for him. When it comes to believing in God, if we do not have the kind of faith that enables us to entrust everything to Him as a small child, it is difficult for us to know what faith is.
